What is PANDAs?
PANDAS is a term used to describe a specific subset of children who experience neuropsychiatric symptoms following a mild illness. These symptoms often manifest dramatically and seemingly overnight, including motor or vocal tics, obsessions, compulsions, mood changes, irritability, hyperactivity, and separation anxiety from loved ones.
Both PANDAs and PANs are considered neurological and psychiatric conditions, characterized by the presence of severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and/or tics that significantly impact daily functioning. Typically, these symptoms emerge between the ages of 3 and puberty and exhibit sudden and dramatic fluctuations.
There is a notable correlation between the onset or exacerbation of symptoms and recent infections, such as strep, COVID, or other viral illnesses. Research suggests that these infections trigger an abnormal immune response, leading to neuropsychiatric manifestations. The management of PANDAs and PANs involves antibiotic treatment for group A strep infections and medications to address the psychiatric symptoms.
The therapeutic approach may encompass antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen, naproxen, and prednisone, as well as psychotropic drugs. In rare cases, IVIG infusions may be necessary for certain patients. Proper evaluation and care, under the guidance of qualified medical professionals, are vital in effectively managing these conditions.
Therapies and Treatments
Anti-inflammatory medications
Anti-inflammatory medications are essential in helping children with PANDAS feel better. PANDAS can cause sudden changes in behavior and emotions, and these medications work by reducing the inflammation in the brain that causes these problems. By taking these medications, kids may experience fewer obsessive behaviors, less anxiety, and improved mood. It helps them recover faster and feel more like themselves again.
Antibiotics
When a child with PANDAS takes antibiotics, it can make them feel better. PANDAS happens because of an infection, and the antibiotics help fight and get rid of that infection. By doing this, the antibiotics can help improve how the child behaves and feels. They can help the child get better faster and feel happier.
IVIG
When a child has PANDAS, IVIG can be a big help in making them feel better. IVIG is a special treatment that gives the child extra antibodies from healthy donors. These antibodies help the child's immune system fight against the symptoms of PANDAS. By doing this, IVIG can reduce the swelling and inflammation in the brain, which can improve how the child acts and feels. IVIG can lead to better behavior and emotions, making the child feel happier and more like themselves.
